The doctor advised how to take weight loss drugs before surgery
Is it possible to continue taking drugs with glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists on the eve of surgery? This question has recently been asked more and more often by patients. The answer was provided by an endocrinologist with many years of experience, Olena Davydenko.
Drugs containing GLP-1 agonists include not only Ozempic, Rybelsus, Wegovy, but also Saxenda, Victoza (liraglutide) and Mounjaro, Zepbound (tircepatide). They are actively used for weight loss and appetite control. However, on the eve of surgery, these drugs can cause unwanted complications.
“In patients without diabetes who take GLP-1 agonists, there is a risk of aspiration pneumonia during general anesthesia - when the contents of the stomach enter the respiratory tract. This is a serious complication, so it is extremely important to follow the updated recommendations,” notes Olena Davydenko.
According to the doctor, in November 2024, the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) updated the protocol for taking these drugs before surgical interventions. Not everyone needs to cancel the drugs, but there are mandatory conditions for their safe use.
What you need to do before surgery if you are taking GLP-1 drugs:
1. Be sure to inform the surgeon and anesthesiologist that you are taking these drugs.
2. Do not take the drug on the day of surgery or the day before.
3. Do not increase the dose for at least a week before the intervention.
4. Follow a liquid diet 24 hours before surgery.
“If you are just planning to start therapy with these drugs, but you know that you will have surgery in the near future, it is better to postpone the start of the course. This is a safety issue,” emphasizes Olena Davydenko.
