The issue of the safety of using popular weight loss drugs during pregnancy is of concern to more and more women.

This is not surprising: today, GLP-1 (incretin)-based drugs are actively used not only for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, but also for weight control. At the same time, many patients are planning motherhood - and need clear, scientifically based answers.

What are GLP-1 drugs?

This is a group of drugs that mimic the action of glucagon-like peptide-1 - a hormone that regulates appetite, glycemia and gastric motility. This category includes drugs such as semaglutide and tirzepatide, known under the trade names Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, Zepbound.

These are the drugs that are widely used today for weight correction. But what is known about their safety during pregnancy and during pregnancy?

What do the studies say?

Data obtained in animal studies once raised concerns about the possible teratogenic effect of incretins - the possibility of affecting the development of the embryo. This became the basis for a cautious attitude towards their use by women of reproductive age.

However, new studies conducted among women with type 2 diabetes, obesity or PCOS who accidentally took GLP-1 in the early stages did not demonstrate an increased risk of serious congenital malformations. According to Olena Davydenko, the main reason for such safety may be the very nature of the GLP-1 molecule:

“This is a large protein structure that probably does not penetrate the placental barrier in the critical first weeks of pregnancy. But at the same time, it should be remembered that such studies are not yet enough, especially regarding the latest formulas with prolonged action.”

What do doctors recommend?

Despite encouraging preliminary data, the medical community has not yet recognized GLP-1 drugs as safe for pregnant women. That is why international protocols and clinical recommendations advise:
• Completely stop taking GLP-1 drugs at least 2 months before the planned conception. 
• In the case of an unplanned pregnancy, immediately consult a doctor for a risk assessment and correction of therapy.
