Endocrinologist talks about a new generation of weight loss drugs (Video)
Among the new reliable developments in the fight against obesity, the name “retatrutide” is increasingly heard - an experimental molecule that has already surpassed the effectiveness of known GLP-1 drugs.
What exactly is known about this substance and will it really become a revolution in the treatment of excess weight - explains endocrinologist and nutritionist with many years of clinical experience Olena Davydenko.
What is retatrutide?
Retatrutide is not a commercial name for the drug, but an active ingredient. Like tirzepatide in Mounjaro, retatrutide is an injectable peptide that is administered once a week. But its main difference is its triple mechanism of action. It contains three synthetic hormones at once: GLP-1, GIP and glucagon, which not only enhance the feeling of satiety, but also activate metabolism.
The results of the studies are impressive
Participants in clinical trials who took retatrutide for 11 months lost an average of more than 24% of their body weight. Some lost up to 31%, when using the maximum dose of 12 mg. It is also important that there was not a single patient who did not lose weight - even the minimum weight loss was at least 5%.
According to Olena Davydenko, these are the highest rates among all incretin drugs. For comparison: tirzepatide provides a loss of about 25% of weight, semaglutide - up to 15%. But even these drugs do not give results for some patients due to metabolic adaptation - the body begins to "save" energy.
Retatrutide was developed for such cases. Thanks to the inclusion of glucagon, it not only suppresses appetite, but also activates energy expenditure, which eliminates the plateau effect and accelerates fat burning.
What about safety?
Retatrutide demonstrates a powerful effect on the CNS: it affects the hypothalamus, reward centers, reduces inflammation and oxidative stress in the brain. But scientists do not yet have a complete picture of its long-term safety. The drug is in phase 3 of clinical trials, which will be completed in 2026.
About the dangers of unofficial analogues
Officially, retatrutide has not yet been approved for use. However, dubious offers are already appearing on the network: “analogues”, “triple agonists”, products from Chinese laboratories - without certification, quality control and with a real risk to health.
Olena Davydenko emphasizes: the use of such substances is an experiment on oneself. None of the samples available on the market is licensed, and patients who turn to such “alternatives” expose themselves to serious danger.
When to expect legalization?
The developer of the drug - Eli Lilly - has already submitted a request for accelerated registration. Retatrutide is expected to go on sale in 2026–2027. Until then, doctors advise against experimenting and waiting for the official launch of the drug.
