Popular GLP-1 weight loss drugs cause related problems – doctor

Endocrinologist Olena Davydenko shares the most up-to-date information from international congresses in the field of endocrinology, which took place in May 2025. Two large-scale events took place simultaneously on opposite sides of the world:

The European Congress on Obesity (ECO) in Malaga and the conference of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology (AACE) in Orlando. Both events focused on one topic - GLP-1 drugs (Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, Zepbound), their effectiveness, risks and legal consequences.

GLP-1 - briefly about the main thing

GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) is a hormone produced in the intestines and regulates appetite, slows down gastric emptying, increases insulin sensitivity. Drugs based on it have become a real revolution in the treatment of not only type 2 diabetes, but also obesity. Today, all the most powerful weight loss drugs - already approved or those still in development - are based on GLP-1.

Even those who first discovered GLP-1 do not fully understand how these drugs work. Why does one person lose weight quickly and easily on them, while another does not? Why do some people have side effects, while others have none? The scientific answer has not yet been found.

For the first time in the history of this topic, not only doctors and researchers, but also lawyers gathered at the congresses. It was they who raised the key question: do manufacturers really warn about all possible risks?

The scientific community claims that over more than 20 years of using GLP-1 in the treatment of diabetes, the drugs have shown high effectiveness and relative safety. But for patients without diabetes who take them only for weight loss, the long-term consequences have not yet been sufficiently studied.

The legal community is already dealing with hundreds of lawsuits. Affected patients are suing Eli Lilly (Mounjaro, Zepbound) and Novo Nordisk (Ozempic, Wegovy). People claim to have experienced serious side effects that were not mentioned in the instructions. Among them:
• paralysis of the stomach (gastroparesis)
• intestinal obstruction
• deep vein thrombosis
• pulmonary embolism
• depressive disorders and panic attacks
• visual impairment (including NAION) and even cases of blindness

In April-May 2025 alone, 1,124 patients joined the class action lawsuit against Eli Lilly. As of June 2025, 1,809 lawsuits have already been filed for damage from Mounjaro, Zepbound and similar drugs. Another 1,882 individual cases are against Ozempic. Lawyers predict that by the end of the year, thousands of new plaintiffs will join the lawsuits, as the popularity of GLP-1 drugs is growing every day — along with the number of complications.

Endocrinologist Olena Davydenko emphasizes: GLP-1 is a powerful tool that can give excellent results, but only with the right approach. Without examination, without correction of concomitant malfunctions and without medical support — these drugs may not only not help, but also harm.
