Endocrinologist advised how to properly stop taking popular weight loss drugs

Endocrinologist, nutritionist Olena Davydenko told on her Youtube channel how to properly stop taking weight loss drugs:
“Mounjaro and Zepbound are the most powerful weight loss drugs that mimic the action of two hormones. They radically suppress appetite and contribute to effective weight loss. However, not everyone and not always needs to take them constantly,” the doctor points out.
When should you stop or pause taking them?
• You have reached your target weight. If your weight has stabilized at the desired level, you can consider gradually reducing the dose or stopping taking it.
• Tolerance to the drug has developed. This means that the body has become accustomed to the active substance, and the drug has ceased to have the expected effect.
• Significant adverse reactions. Some patients experience serious side effects that make further use of the drug undesirable.
When reducing the dose or completely stopping taking Mounjaro or Zepbound, the effect of the drug will gradually weaken. At this point, it is critically important that the patient has a properly adjusted eating behavior. If a person has not learned to control their diet, has not developed healthy eating habits and does not understand how calorie balance works, the risk of regaining excess weight increases significantly.
What should be considered?
• Smart portion control. After stopping taking the drugs, appetite may partially return, so it is important not to overeat.
• Focus on proteins, fiber and healthy fats. Such nutrition contributes to long-term satiety and stable blood sugar levels.
• Diet. Avoid chaotic eating and snacking against the background of emotions.
• Physical activity. Even light physical activity helps maintain energy balance and stabilize weight.
If a person has not developed proper eating behavior, a sharp reduction in the dose can cause a feeling of fear, anxiety about overeating and uncontrolled weight regain. In such cases, you should not sharply reduce the dose - this can cause psychological and physiological stress.
The tactic of gradually increasing the intervals between taking the drug will help you adapt to the changes without sudden jumps in appetite and anxiety. Thus, the body gradually adapts to the decrease in the level of the drug, and the person has more time to correct eating behavior. This also helps to understand whether there is a need for further taking the drug, or whether the person is already able to control eating without its help.
Depending on the condition and reaction of the body, there are different tactics for stopping Mounjaro or Zepbound therapy. This does not always mean a sharp stop - sometimes it is important to gradually reduce the dosage or increase the intervals between doses.
