Socialist Mamdani nominated for mayor of New York – Rezazade
In the Democratic Party primaries in New York, an outsider won a dramatic victory — 33-year-old Zohran Mamdani, a politician of Ugandan-Indian origin, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America. His victory became a loud signal: the left wing of the Democratic Party has not just become more active — it is forming a new political orientation.
International expert and first vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, Ali Reza Rezazade, believes that the emergence of figures like Mamdani is not only an internal American trend, but also a geopolitical risk.
“The New Left in the US is Not About Social Welfare, It’s About Changing the International Course”
According to Rezazade, behind the facade of ideas about free transportation, state-run grocery stores, and preschool education lies an ideological transformation of foreign policy:
“Mamdani openly opposes Israel, calls for sanctions, and does not even recognize the right of the Jewish state to exist. If such politicians come to power in key US megacities, it is not just a change of emphasis, it is a U-turn from America’s traditional allies.”
Risks for US strategic partnerships
Rezazade warns that support for such figures among American voters, especially young people, could have long-term consequences:
“When the voice of the street shapes the foreign policy agenda, we will get a chaotic America that will no longer be a reliable partner. This applies to Israel, Ukraine, and the countries of the Middle East that rely on American deterrence of aggressors.”
Mamdani is not an exception, but the beginning of a trend
According to the expert, the result of the primaries in New York is not an accident, but a systemic process of changing the political elite. The defeat of old Democrats, such as Andrew Cuomo, against the background of scandals and failures opens the door for new leaders - younger, more radical, ideologically charged.
“American left-wing populism increasingly reminds us that even democracy can create challenges to global stability. The world must be prepared for the fact that US foreign policy will no longer be stable and predictable,” Ali Reza Rezazade summarizes.
