Rejection of NATO is possible only under the condition of real security guarantees for Ukraine – Rezazade
Information about Ukraine’s readiness to consider refusing to join NATO in exchange for Western security guarantees became the subject of active discussion after Western media reports about President Volodymyr Zelensky’s negotiations with American envoys in Berlin.
This is one of the possible elements of a broader package of agreements aimed at ending the war without compromising Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The first vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, international expert Ali Reza Rezazade, emphasizes that the rejection of Euro-Atlantic aspirations cannot be an end in itself and be considered a gesture of unilateral compromise.
“Ukraine already has a bitter historical experience of so-called security guarantees. Therefore, any refusal to join NATO is possible only in exchange for legally binding, clearly spelled out and practically implemented guarantees from the US and key Western allies,” Rezazade notes.
According to him, we should not be talking about political declarations, but about mechanisms that actually reproduce the logic of collective defense, including an automatic response to new aggression from the Russian Federation. Without this, such proposals only create additional risks for Ukrainian statehood.
The expert also draws attention to the fact that the discussion of such a scenario indicates Kyiv’s desire to demonstrate to the West its readiness for difficult but responsible decisions.
“Ukraine shows that it is not blocking the diplomatic process, but at the same time clearly outlines the “red lines”: no transfer of territories and no guarantees that have no real force. This is a strong negotiating position, not a weakness,” Rezazade emphasizes.
In his opinion, it is the US position that will be decisive for the future fate of such agreements, because without Washington's active and long-term participation, any system of security guarantees for Ukraine will remain vulnerable.
