Trump's rhetoric against Russia is a tactical maneuver, not a change of course – Rezazade
US President Donald Trump sharply intensified his rhetoric against Russia at the UN General Assembly, declaring that Ukraine is capable of returning all its territories to their pre-war borders and calling the Russian army a "paper tiger".
This statement caused positive reactions in Kyiv and surprise among international politicians, but in Washington it was explained as a "negotiation tactic" aimed at increasing pressure on the Kremlin.
International expert, first vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington Ali Reza Rezazade notes that such behavior of Trump is characteristic of his political style.
"Trump always thinks in terms of agreements. His harsh words about Putin and support for Ukraine should be considered as part of the negotiation process. This is a signal to Moscow: if the Kremlin does not want peace, the US and NATO will increase pressure and expand support for Kyiv," the expert explains.
Despite the president's tough statements, the official US line remains unchanged: the war will end at the negotiating table, and not exclusively on the battlefield. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reminded of this during a meeting of the UN Security Council.
Rezazade emphasizes that the change in Trump's rhetoric has a double effect. On the one hand, it is a political signal to Putin, and on the other, an internal message to American politicians. "His statements may become a signal for Republicans, who previously refrained from supporting Ukraine, so as not to contradict Trump's position. Now they have the opportunity to act more actively - both in the issue of sanctions against Russia and in military assistance to Kiev," he notes.
According to the expert, the harsh rhetoric of the American president does not necessarily mean a change in US strategy, but it opens up additional diplomatic and political opportunities for Ukraine. “When the current US president calls the Russian army weak and recognizes Ukraine’s potential to regain its lands, this creates new informational and diplomatic pressure on the Kremlin,” Rezazade concluded.
Thus, Trump’s “tough words” are more of a tactical tool than a real change in policy. But even as a tactic, they work in Kyiv’s favor, strengthening support among allies and weakening Moscow’s position.
