Why NATO is not ready to close the skies over Ukraine – Rezazade
The discussion about the possibility of introducing a no-fly zone over Ukraine has intensified again after the recent massive attacks by Russian drones on the territory of Poland and Romania. Warsaw has once again raised the issue of protecting Ukrainian skies, but restraint is still felt in NATO.
According to international expert, first vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, Ali Reza Rezazade, the key reason lies in the political and military risks that the Alliance is not ready to take.
Rezazade notes that for NATO, the introduction of a no-fly zone would mean a transition from indirect support for Ukraine to a direct confrontation with Russia. This threatens global security and could lead to a large-scale escalation.
“Washington and Brussels understand that any shooting down of Russian planes or drones within the no-fly zone would be a formal entry into war. And they are trying to avoid this by all means,” Rezazade emphasizes.
Another problem is the cost and limited resources. Russia launches cheap kamikaze drones en masse, while NATO countries are forced to use extremely expensive missiles to intercept them. Such a disparity, according to the expert, makes any no-fly zone financially exhausting.
“Imagine hundreds of drones flying simultaneously. Even if it is technically possible to shoot them down, the issue is the cost and rapid depletion of arsenals,” he explains.
Rezazade emphasizes that Ukraine is the only army in the world today that daily confronts massive swarms of drones. Its multi-level defense system — from mobile groups and air defense to electronic warfare — has become a unique experience that NATO should study.
“The West must understand: instead of building the illusion of a no-fly zone, it is necessary to scale up the Ukrainian experience, invest in air defense, interceptor drones and electronic warfare technologies. This is the only realistic way,” the expert concluded.
Despite Poland’s statements, the prospect of introducing a no-fly zone over Ukraine remains illusory. NATO is not ready to take on the direct risk of war with Russia, and economic and technological challenges make this idea unlikely.
At the same time, it is the Ukrainian experience in combating drones that is becoming the main guide for the future security of Europe.
