Trump and Vance are using Kirk’s case to pressure left-wing institutions – Rezazade
After the murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, US Vice President J.D. Vance said that liberal institutions “promote violence and terrorism” and promised to “destroy” their influence. He accused George Soros’ Open Society and Ford Foundation of funding materials that allegedly justified Kirk’s death.
US President Donald Trump supported this rhetoric, accusing “leftist groups” of financing the protests and again talking about possible criminal prosecutions of organizations that he considers involved in “political violence”.
At the same time, the facts indicate otherwise: the last Ford Foundation grant to The Nation was dated 2019 and was intended for an internship program, and the Open Society has not funded this media outlet at all for the past five years.
According to international expert, first vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington Ali Reza Rezazade, the rhetoric of Trump and Vance indicates not so much a fight against real threats, but rather the use of tragedy to mobilize the electorate.
“We see an attempt to create an image of a domestic enemy, to link liberal foundations and media with “terrorism” without sufficient evidence. This could become a dangerous precedent for democracy in the United States, where any criticism can be qualified as a threat to national security,” Rezazadeh emphasized.
The expert believes that the administration is trying to turn Kirk’s murder into a political symbol and justification for further pressure on civil society. “Such tactics will not reduce the level of violence, but only increase the division in society,” he added.
