US must demonstrate force, not just words in response to Iran – Rezazade
The US is facing a difficult test of its ability to contain escalation in relations with Iran amid the largest popular protests in decades and the Iranian regime’s harsh crackdown on civilians.
The protests, which began in late December 2025, were accompanied by large-scale arrests and the deaths of thousands of people, which caused international concern and calls for action from the West.
President Donald Trump has repeatedly warned the Iranian leadership of serious consequences if repression continues and has been active in rhetoric about possible steps, including tightening sanctions and deploying naval forces in the region.
International expert and first vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, Ali Reza Rezazade, emphasizes that statements of support for the protesters and punishment of the regime must be moved to real mechanisms of deterrence. He believes that “effective deterrence is not just words, but clear actions that demonstrate a willingness to defend human rights and the international order, even if it requires risky steps.” According to him, in response to the brutal suppression of protests, Iran must feel not only moral condemnation, but also strategic pressure that creates real costs for the country’s political leadership.
Rezazade also emphasizes that this is not just an internal issue for Iran, but a test for the global community: “If the world fails to respond effectively to large-scale human rights violations, it will be a signal to other regimes that brutal repression can remain without significant consequences.” In his assessment, “firm deterrence must combine sanctions pressure, political isolation and clear signals about the possibility of further action if violence persists.”
The expert also points out that there is a risk of diplomatic loss if deterrence strategies are not backed up by real levers of pressure: "There should be not only statements of intent, but also concrete steps that can change the regime's behavior. Without this, regimes that use force against their citizens can count on weak consequences and continue their policy of repression."
