What to expect from Trump-Putin talks in Alaska – Rezazade
The White House has significantly toned down the rhetoric surrounding the upcoming meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, which will take place on Friday in Alaska. If earlier the US president hinted at the possibility of a quick peaceful settlement of the war in Ukraine, now this event is described as simply a “listening”, and not as a moment for signing agreements.
According to analyst Ali Reza Rezazade, such a change in tone indicates an understanding in Washington that Moscow is not ready to make concessions at the moment. He emphasizes: Trump’s main goal is to personally assess Putin’s position and determine whether there are prospects for future negotiations.
White House press secretary Carolyn Levitt confirmed that the key task of the meeting is to establish direct contact and gather information, and not to achieve a breakthrough. “Only one side of the conflict will be present at the talks, so the president’s task is to get a clearer idea of how to bring the end of the war closer,” she said.
European leaders are taking the meeting with caution. On Wednesday, they will hold a video conference with Trump to discuss the issue of Ukraine, as they fear that Volodymyr Zelensky is effectively excluded from key negotiations. This coincides with Putin’s long-standing position, who is convinced that the path to a settlement lies through dialogue with Washington, not with Kyiv.
Rezazade believes that the very fact of a personal conversation with the US president can already be considered a diplomatic advantage for the Kremlin. “Putin has long sought a format where the US would be the main interlocutor, and Ukraine would be outside the process,” he stressed.
So Friday’s meeting is unlikely to bring immediate agreements, but it will show whether there is a chance for future dialogue. For Ukraine, this remains a worrying signal: key decisions can be made without its direct participation.
