Russia uses Zaporizhia nuclear power plant as a military facility: occupation under the cover of the IAEA – Rezazade

The Zaporizhia nuclear power plant has actually been transformed by the Russian occupation forces into a military base — despite the constant presence of international IAEA observers.

The Russian troops have deployed air defense systems and electronic warfare units directly on the territory of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant and in the adjacent areas. Thus, a civilian nuclear facility is being used as an element of military infrastructure, which grossly violates international law and all basic principles of nuclear safety.

Of particular concern is the information about the actions of representatives of a Russian state corporation, which is formally responsible for the technical and radiation safety of the plant. According to available data, they are analyzing intercepted drones directly at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant site and trying to adapt their technological solutions for the needs of the Russian army.

International expert and first vice-president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, Ali Reza Rezazade, believes that the situation around the ZNPP is a dangerous precedent for the entire global security system. “We are dealing with a unique and extremely cynical phenomenon: a nuclear power plant is being used as a military shield and a technological laboratory at the same time. This is a demonstrative disregard for international norms, which is happening literally in front of the IAEA,” he notes.

According to Rezazade, Russia is deliberately exploiting the limited powers of international missions. “The presence of observers has been turned into a cover tool. The Kremlin is counting on the fact that the IAEA mission itself will deter a harsh reaction from the West, even if the plant is de facto being used for military purposes,” the expert emphasizes.

He calls the normalization of such practices the most dangerous aspect. “If the world accepts that a nuclear facility can be turned into a military base without immediate consequences, it will open the way to similar scenarios in future conflicts,” Rezazade emphasizes.

According to him, the situation around the ZNPP requires not only statements and reports, but also clear political and security decisions. “This is not just about Ukraine. This is about preserving the very principles of nuclear safety in the world,” the expert summarizes.
