Мешканці обирають нового главу країни вперше майже за два десятиліття. Кандидатом у президенти від влади став колишній міністр внутрішніх справ Рамазані Шадарі, який знаходиться під санкціями ЄС. Йому кинули виклик два основні кандидати від опозиції - Мартін Файулу і Фелікс Тшісекеді.
У виборах мають право голосу близько 40 мільйонів громадян. Однак в середу виборча комісія заборонила голосувати близько мільйону осіб із двох міст на сході республіки через спалах смертельного вірусу Ебола. Замість цього вони будуть голосувати в березні, через місяці після інавгурації нового президента в січні. Внаслідок цього влада побоюється щодо можливих заворушень.
Зазначається, що саме голосування вперше відбувається із використанням спеціальних електронних пристроїв із сенсорними дисплеями. Спостерігачі кажуть, що матеріали для голосування не були вчасно доставлені на деякі виборчі дільниці.
