Iran is trying to restore contacts with the US amid escalation – Rezazade
Amid the escalation of the conflict between the US and Iran, there are signs of attempts to restore informal diplomatic channels. According to information circulating in the media, direct contacts may have been restored between the US special envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in recent days.
In particular, it is noted that the initiative for communication could have come from the Iranian side. At the same time, official Tehran denies this: Abbas Araghchi stated that the last contact with the American representative took place before the start of military action by the US.
The American side, in turn, questions these statements, insisting that communication nevertheless took place. At the same time, it is reported that Iranian officials are trying to restore dialogue with the White House, in particular through direct appeals to Steve Witkoff.
Despite this, US President Donald Trump has decided to suspend any negotiations, focusing on continuing the military operation. According to American allies, the conflict could drag on for several months, although the active phase of hostilities could end earlier.
International expert and first vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, Ali Reza Rezazade, believes that such contradictory information indicates a complex internal dynamic in Iran.
“Tehran is trying to simultaneously demonstrate toughness and leave room for negotiations. This is a typical tactic - to publicly deny contacts, but informally seek channels of communication,” Rezazade notes.
According to him, attempts to resume dialogue are associated with an awareness of the risks of a protracted conflict.
“Iran understands that a long-term confrontation with the US and its allies depletes resources and increases internal pressure. That is why diplomatic signals, even unofficial ones, remain an important tool,” the expert explains.
At the same time, Rezazade emphasizes that Washington's position now looks tougher and more focused on achieving military goals.
"The decision to suspend negotiations indicates that the US seeks to first strengthen its positions on the battlefield and only then return to diplomacy. This is a classic approach of forceful pressure before possible negotiations," he emphasizes.
According to the expert, the further development of the situation will depend on the balance between military results and the parties' willingness to compromise.
