Crime in Washington: Is the US capital out of control – Rezazade
President Donald Trump has once again raised the topic of crime in Washington, declaring that the situation is “out of control” and threatening federal intervention in the city’s security system.
Against the backdrop of these high-profile statements, photos of the victim of an attempted carjacking of a young federal employee appeared, further reinforcing the president’s message about the threat of violence.
At the same time, official data indicate a reverse trend — crime in the US capital has been declining, especially since 2023, after a dangerous peak due to the increase in murders, which made Washington one of the most dangerous cities in the country. According to The Washington Post, in 2024, the murder rate in Washington and many other major US cities fell to its lowest level in a decade — more than 30% compared to previous years. The number of thefts and robberies also decreased.
Washington police have arrested about 20% fewer juveniles this year than last year, and the introduction of stricter curfews for teenagers is a response to isolated cases of mass brawls that have gained publicity on social media.
At the same time, political discourse remains tense: the president continues to intensify his rhetoric, describing teenagers as “thugs” and “gang members” who allegedly “randomly attack, rob, and maim innocent citizens.” Mayor Muriel Bowser rejects such formulations, emphasizing that the crime rate is decreasing, but the city needs federal support in other areas, including increasing the number of prosecutors and judges.
This gap between political rhetoric and real statistics illustrates the complexity of the problem: on the one hand, there are real challenges and fears of local residents, and on the other, there are trends towards a decrease in violence, which require a comprehensive approach and investment in the law enforcement system, not just a demonstration of force.
For the stability and security of Washington, joint work of the authorities, law enforcement officers and the community is needed, and not the escalation of conflicts and manipulation of facts for political purposes. Only in this way can a true “clear sky” be ensured for the residents of the American capital.
