Iran's strike on Azerbaijan: a new phase of regional escalation - Rezazade

An Iranian drone attacked the international airport in Nakhichevan (Azerbaijan), causing a fire. This is the first case of the use of such UAVs to strike the territory of the country, which creates a dangerous precedent for the entire region.

The incident occurred against the backdrop of a sharp increase in tension around Iran. The day before, an attempt to attack the territory of Turkey was reported, and the current strike on Azerbaijan may indicate an expansion of the geography of potential targets.

Analysts emphasize that this is not just a local incident, but a testing of a new model of force pressure using drones as a tool of strategic influence.

International expert and first vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, Ali Reza Rezazade, believes that the attack has much broader consequences than it might seem at first glance.

“The use of strike drones outside the immediate conflict zone is a signal of Iran’s readiness to expand the theater of confrontation. It is a demonstration of capabilities and psychological influence on neighboring states,” Rezazade notes.

According to him, special attention should be paid to the geography of the potential reach of Iranian missiles and drones. Their zone of impact covers a significant part of the Middle East, the Caucasus and certain regions of Europe.

“Ukraine, Poland, Austria, Italy and other countries are theoretically within the reach of Iranian medium-range missiles. The question is not whether there is an intention to attack Europe today, but that the technical possibility itself already exists,” the expert emphasizes.

Rezazade also emphasizes that Iran’s current strategy is based on asymmetric tools — drones and missiles, which allow creating the effect of unpredictability and pressure without a formal declaration of war.

“When a drone strikes an international airport, it is not just a military action, it is a signal to the entire region. Such incidents form a new security reality, where even countries outside the direct conflict become potential targets,” he emphasizes.

According to the expert, further developments will depend on the reaction of the international community. If the attack remains without a tough political and sanctions response, the risk of recurrence of such incidents will increase.
