Iran demonstrates nuclear blackmail as a starting position for negotiations with the US – Rezazade
The statement by US special representative Steve Witkoff that during the first day of negotiations the Iranian delegation openly reported the presence of 460 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60% and the potential possibility of creating 11 nuclear warheads caused a serious international resonance.
According to Witkoff, Iranian negotiators stated without concealment that material with a level of enrichment of 20% could be brought to 90% — that is, to weapons level — in about a week or a maximum of ten days. In contrast, 60% uranium, according to experts, could be brought to weapons level even faster.
International expert and first vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, Ali Reza Rezazade, emphasizes that such rhetoric is not an accident, but a conscious strategy of Tehran. “Iran begins negotiations not with a compromise, but with a demonstration of force. This is a classic tactic of nuclear blackmail: to show that the regime is almost on the verge of creating weapons, and to force opponents to bargain from a position of fear,” he notes.
According to Rezazade, the very fact of openly acknowledging the potential to create 11 warheads indicates the regime’s deep confidence in its own impunity. “They are not just stating the technical possibility. They are emphasizing that they were able to bypass international control mechanisms. This is a signal not only to the United States, but also to the IAEA and the entire global non-proliferation system,” the expert emphasizes.
He also draws attention to the political aspect. “When a negotiating position begins with a threat of nuclear potential, it means that the regime views the very fact of approaching weapons as a bargaining tool. This is a dangerous precedent for the entire Middle East,” Rezazade believes.
In his opinion, the reaction of the international community will determine the further development of events. “If such statements are left without a tough response, this will only push the regime to further escalation. Nuclear potential in the hands of an authoritarian system is used primarily as a political lever,” Ali Reza Rezazade summarizes.
