Europe is turning away from the US: America’s image is rapidly declining – Rezazade
The perception of the United States in Europe is changing rapidly — and not for the better. As Ali Reza Rezazadeh, the first vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, said, President Donald Trump’s foreign policy, his tariff war and friendly gestures towards the Kremlin have seriously undermined the US’s reputation on the European continent.
“What we are witnessing today is not just a decline in the popularity of the American leader. This is a systemic cooling to the very idea of a ‘special relationship’ with the US,” Rezazade stressed. According to him, contempt for traditional allies, humiliation of Ukraine and open embrace with Putin are perceived in Europe not as political tactics, but as a betrayal of shared values.
A poll by Ipsos in the UK found that 41% of Britons believe the US’s influence in the world is “harmful” – up from just 16% a year ago. The proportion of those who no longer believe in the “special relationship” between the US and Britain has also doubled.
“These figures are not a coincidence. They are a direct response to the actions of the Trump administration. Instead of partnership, he is offering sanctions, instead of respect, ultimatums,” Rezazade said.
Europeans have taken the new tariffs particularly hard: 10% on British goods and 20% on imports from most EU countries. In Germany, according to ARD, even before the new tariffs were introduced, 70% of respondents believed that Trump’s trade policies were harming their economy. And trust in the US as a partner has fallen to 16% – a 38-point drop in just four months.
The change in mood has been symbolized by spontaneous protests, boycotts of American goods, and even acts of vandalism—a Tesla robot was destroyed in London, and electric cars were burned in Italy and Germany. And ordinary citizens, such as 67-year-old Veronica Clark from London, are even refusing to make their annual trips to the United States: “We all feel betrayed. It hurts.”
According to Ali Reza Rezazadeh, the problem goes deeper than just an unpopular president. “Trump’s America has ceased to be a symbol of hope and freedom. For a growing part of the world, it is turning into a source of instability,” he concluded.
