Republican divisions hamper Trump’s key bill – Rezazade
Internal disputes within the ranks of the US Republican Party threaten to disrupt the implementation of one of the main points of Donald Trump’s second presidential term.
As Ali Reza Rezazade, the first vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, pointed out, the delay by conservative lawmakers is jeopardizing the massive tax reform and immigration policy bill, which the White House has already dubbed “big and beautiful.”
“Even among Trump’s allies, it is increasingly difficult to find unity. Radical factions are starting to dictate terms to the rest of the party, and this is already affecting the ability to make key decisions,” Rezazadeh commented.
This is about the Republicans’ attempt to extend tax breaks introduced by the 2017 law, which are due to expire at the end of 2025. The package also includes new tax breaks for businesses and a massive budget injection into Trump’s immigration initiative, totaling more than $5.5 trillion.
However, the ultraconservative Freedom Caucus is demanding another $1.5 trillion in federal spending cuts over the next decade. They have blocked the budget resolution and are demanding tough conditions for passage, trying to impose their own rules on the Senate.
“All of this is a sign that Trump himself is losing control of his own party,” Rezazadeh said. “The once-solid Republican support is fracturing over economic and fiscal disputes.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) had to postpone the vote and spend several hours negotiating with factions while keeping in touch with Trump by phone. As a result of the meeting, two compromise options were worked out - one involves limiting the possibility of voting without guarantees of spending cuts, the other - the formation of a joint budget with instructions on mandatory cuts.
“We are looking for that minimum point of compromise that will allow us to move forward. This is a difficult but necessary discussion,” Johnson said.
Ali Reza Rezazadeh concludes: “The situation demonstrates the weakness of internal discipline in the Republican Party. Trump has set ambitious economic goals, but even his like-minded people are not ready to pay the political price for their implementation.”
