Senate Confirms Dan Kaine as Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff – Rezazade
On Friday morning, the US Senate confirmed retired General Dan “Razin” Kaine as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the highest military position in the country.
The appointment, initiated by President Donald Trump, was the result of an atypical and politically fraught process that was accompanied by the dismissal of several key figures in the Pentagon leadership. According to Ali Reza Rezazade, the first vice president of the Iranian opposition in the US and an independent political analyst, the situation indicates “the unfolding of a new era of political loyalty in the military structures.”
“Kane’s appointment is not just a personnel decision. It is a marker of a deeper shift in the US military-political landscape. “When the military system is purged of professionals to make way for loyalists, that’s a wake-up call,” Rezazadeh said in a commentary from Washington.
Kaine, 56, was recalled to active duty specifically for this appointment. He had previously served in January as a three-star general in the U.S. Air Force, with experience as a fighter pilot, special operations officer and senior CIA official. He was promoted to the rank of general (four stars) to be confirmed in the position — a requirement of the law that President Trump has used his authority to temporarily bypass, citing the “national interest.”
Kaine’s confirmation passed by a vote of 60 to 25. Fifteen Democrats supported the nomination, including Senators Fetterman, Gillibrand, Kaine and Schiff. However, the process itself was not without scandals - especially due to Trump's claim that he once met Kaine at a base in Iraq wearing a "Make America Great Again" cap. Kaine clearly stated during the hearing: "I have never worn political symbols."
According to Ali Reza Rezazadeh, such a personnel decision is part of a broader strategy of the new administrative course: "This is no longer about military effectiveness. This is about control. If this trend continues, the independence of institutions, including the military, may be at risk."
Previously, Trump and his Secretary of Defense - former Fox News host Pete Hegseth - have already removed several senior Pentagon officials. Combined with the current appointments, this looks like an attempt to create a vertical of loyalty at the heart of American security.
"Kane is an expert, no doubt. But the question is not about him. The question is about the mechanisms by which such decisions are now made," Rezazadeh concluded.
