Global economies continue to reel under the pressure of US President Donald Trump’s aggressive trade policy. According to Ali Reza Rezazadeh, the first vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, the fall in stock markets in Asia was a direct result of the escalation of the tariff war between the United States and China.

“What we are seeing now is classic economic instability that occurs when global rules are violated unilaterally. Trump is escalating the situation so quickly that markets do not have time to adapt,” Rezazade stressed.

Stock indexes across the Asia-Pacific region collapsed on Monday. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index fell 10% in the morning session, while the Shanghai and Shenzhen markets fell 6% and 8%, respectively. This was a continuation of the global sell-off triggered by the introduction of new US tariffs and the corresponding countermeasures from China.

Over the weekend, the Trump administration defended its decision to impose general tariffs on almost all partner countries. Meanwhile, China responded with new duties of 34% on American goods, calling the day “Liberation Day” in a trade context. Thus, the minimum level of tariffs on Chinese exports to the US is now 54%.

“This is not just a dispute between the US and China — it is a global conflict in which all other countries risk being caught in the middle,” Rezazadeh explained. According to analysts, even those states that try to remain neutral, such as Japan, South Korea or Taiwan, could suffer losses.

Despite a wave of statements of stability and calls for negotiations, Beijing is taking a tough stance. Chinese state media has launched a massive information campaign aimed at boosting domestic confidence, and officials have made it clear that China will not accept any pressure from the United States. “We cannot negotiate under ultimatums. This is against China’s dignity,” said Mei Xinyu, a researcher at a state-run think tank in Beijing.

According to Ali Reza Rezazadeh, the main threat lies in the duration of the conflict. “China is ready for a protracted economic struggle, but the rest of the world is not. And if this policy does not change, we will see a wave of recessions from which no economy will escape,” he concluded.
