Russia launched an energy war against Ukraine: strikes on 9 regions and a new challenge to the West – Rezazade
Russia carried out one of the largest attacks in recent months — on Sunday night, more than 700 drones and dozens of missiles struck nine regions of Ukraine, causing widespread destruction of energy infrastructure. At least five people died, including a family with a child in the Lviv region.
Tens of thousands of consumers were left without electricity.
The Russian Defense Ministry said that the targets were “enterprises of the Ukrainian military-industrial complex and gas and energy infrastructure facilities.” At the same time, the Russian side traditionally did not acknowledge the strikes on residential buildings and hospitals.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called on Western partners to accelerate the transfer of air defense systems and the implementation of defense agreements:
“We need stronger defense, faster implementation of all agreements, especially in the field of air defense, to make this air terror senseless,” Zelenskyy wrote.
International expert, first vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, Ali Reza Rezazade, emphasizes that this attack indicates a new stage of the war — the Kremlin’s energy campaign aimed at exhausting Ukraine and weakening European support.
He emphasizes that the current attack is a warning before the winter period, when Ukraine’s energy system will become the main target of the aggressor. “The scale of these strikes indicates that Moscow plans to make the energy blockade one of the main fronts of the war. This is not just a military tactic — it is a psychological operation against the population to break moral resistance,” the expert says.
Rezazade also stressed that it is time for the West to move from a defensive reaction to a proactive strategy:
“Europe and the US should not just supply air defense systems, but create a real ‘air shield’ for Ukraine. Otherwise, Putin will perceive the West’s restraint as an invitation to continue terror.”
He adds that economic sanctions remain an important but insufficient tool. “As long as the West buys Russian energy resources — directly or indirectly — the Kremlin will have the resources to continue the war. It is necessary to finally impose a complete embargo on Russian gas and oil products, regardless of the political price,” Rezazade concluded.
