The US is once again on the brink of a technical “shutdown” — a shutdown of the federal government due to a lack of funding. On the eve of a crucial meeting at the White House, President Donald Trump is trying to balance the interests of Republicans and Democrats, but the political landscape suggests that reaching a compromise will not be easy.
International expert and first vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, Ali Reza Rezazade, notes that the current standoff is not just a dispute over government funding, but also a strategic battle for control of the agenda in Congress.
“Democrats, led by Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries, are demanding that the Affordable Care Act health insurance subsidies be included in the deal. Instead, Republicans, led by Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune, are trying to hold their ground and prevent social spending from expanding,” Rezazade explains.
According to him, Donald Trump is acting as a mediator and arbitrator at the same time. On the one hand, he is signaling a willingness to negotiate, on the other hand, he is supporting the Republicans, demanding that the Democrats “remove party demands.” “In fact, the president is trying to maintain the image of a person who is able to avoid a crisis, but without making concessions that could hit his political base,” the expert emphasizes.
The White House recognizes that the time factor plays a critical role. Government funding ends on September 30, and any delay can lead to negative economic and political consequences. “The shutdown scenario is undesirable for both parties, but each of them is trying to use the situation to strengthen its own positions before the elections. This explains the harsh rhetoric on both sides,” Rezazade believes.
He emphasizes that, unlike previous years, there is now increased political tension in Washington. “Republicans are trying to prove that they are the ones who control budget discipline, while Democrats are demonstrating to voters their willingness to fight for social guarantees. In this game, President Trump is trying to maintain balance, but not lose the trust of his own party,” the expert notes.
Rezazade predicts that an agreement will be reached at the last moment, because a real shutdown would deal a serious blow to the US economy and the positions of all players. “But each side will pretend that it was they who forced the opponent to make concessions. This is typical Washington policy,” he concluded.
