Trump’s Peace Initiative on Ukraine Based on Illusions – Rezazade

First Vice President of the Iranian Opposition in Washington, international expert Ali Reza Rezazade, expressed serious concern over US President Donald Trump’s approach to a peaceful settlement of the war between Russia and Ukraine.

According to Rezazade, the proposed format of the negotiations and the logic that guides the Trump administration are chaotic, devoid of strategic consistency, and based on three dangerous illusions.

“The main problem is Trump’s belief that Putin wants peace. But Putin consistently demonstrates that he seeks not compromise, but victory. His vision of “eliminating the roots of the crisis” is code for the destruction of Ukrainian statehood,” Rezazadeh emphasizes. He recalled that during the three years of the war, Russia failed to achieve any strategic goal, but suffered catastrophic losses, which are already estimated at over 800 thousand killed and wounded.

The second false thesis, according to the expert, is Trump's perception of Russia as a potential economic Klondike. "Trump has been repeating since the 80s that Russia is a business opportunity. But this is an illusion. The real economy of the Russian Federation is corrupt, weak and inefficient. It is a raw material colony with nuclear weapons," Rezazade said.

At the same time, he emphasized that Ukraine, despite the corruption challenges, has a much greater economic potential: "One of the most innovative military-technological ecosystems in Europe has been formed in Kyiv. This partnership of the future is not a dream of the revival of the Russian empire."

According to Rezazade, Trump's third mistake is an attempt to delegate the entire process to the parties without a clear framework. “Peace does not happen by itself. There is no ‘magic formula’ that will appear if you leave everything to the aggressor’s good will. Real negotiations are diplomacy of force, pressure and a clear plan, which is what the Trump administration lacks today.”

The international expert concluded: “Without a fundamental revision of the strategy, this initiative is doomed. But worse than failure is creating the illusion of peace, which gives the aggressor time to regroup.”
