US-Iran talks in Geneva: last chance for diplomacy or pause before escalation? – Rezazade
The next round of nuclear talks between the United States and Iran will be held on Thursday in Geneva under the mediation of Oman. The dialogue is taking place against the backdrop of an unprecedented US military presence in the Middle East and mutual statements by the parties about their readiness for a force scenario in the event of the failure of diplomacy.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed his intention to present a draft agreement to Washington in the coming days. At the same time, the US emphasizes: Iran should not have either nuclear weapons or the ability to create them, including uranium enrichment. Tehran insists on its right to enrichment and limits the talks exclusively to nuclear issues, refusing to discuss the missile program and support for regional armed groups.
International expert and first vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, Ali Reza Rezazade, believes that the current negotiations are a critical moment for both sides. “We see a classic model of negotiations under pressure: diplomacy is taking place in parallel with a demonstration of force. The US is increasing its military presence, Iran is declaring its readiness for any scenario. This is an attempt to force the opponent to give in before the final stage of the agreements,” he notes.
According to Rezazade, the key issue remains uranium enrichment. “For Washington, zero enrichment or the most stringent restrictions are fundamental. For Tehran, it is a question of sovereignty and political survival of the regime. A compromise is possible only in the format of phased restrictions in exchange for a real and rapid lifting of sanctions,” the expert explains.
He draws special attention to the internal factor. “The Iranian regime is under pressure from the economic crisis and protest sentiment. Sanction isolation is exhausting the system. At the same time, the authorities are trying not to show weakness, especially after the strikes on nuclear facilities in June,” Rezazade emphasizes.
In his opinion, Geneva could become either a point of de-escalation or a prologue to a new round of confrontation. “If the parties find a formula that will allow Iran to save face and the US to provide security guarantees, an agreement is possible. If the demands are ultimatums, the risk of a military scenario will increase,” the expert summarizes.
