Diddy's pardon is a test for Trump and a test for American democracy – Rezazade

The possibility that President Donald Trump will pardon music mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs, accused of conspiracy to commit sexual exploitation and pimping, is not just another case of demonstrating presidential power.

This is a test of the values of American justice. This opinion was expressed by the first vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, international expert Ali Reza Rezazadeh.

"If in the 2020s the US president turns the act of pardon into a political or personal tool, this is a dangerous precedent. Especially when it comes to serious accusations like sexual exploitation. This is not a tax case or a business conflict - these are fundamental values of protecting human dignity," Rezazade stressed.

Sean Combs is currently under investigation on five federal charges, including human trafficking and prostitution. Despite his denials, if convicted, he could spend the rest of his life behind bars. Donald Trump, commenting on the possibility of a pardon, said that he would consider the facts and did not rule out such a possibility - despite past disagreements with Combs.

“The president claims that he does not care who ‘loves or dislikes’ him personally. But in this case, an emotional factor is already interfering - 50 Cent, a long-time opponent of Combs, is publicly trying to influence Trump’s decision by appealing to his feelings and political ego,” Rezazade noted.

He emphasized that such a public game of pardon levers damages trust in the system: “Trump has demonstrated a willingness to intervene in complex criminal cases for reasons of loyalty, media attention or populism. But justice is not a reality show. It cannot have “scriptwriters,” even if they are rappers or political allies.”

In particular, Rezazade drew attention to how the conflict between the stars — Diddy and 50 Cent — is woven into the context of national politics: “American elites must realize that when trials influence presidential decisions, this is the path to political collapse. This looks like a simulation of justice, not its triumph.”

According to an international expert, such a story also has resonance outside the United States: “The whole world is watching how America treats its democracy. If the president starts pardoning friends or acquaintances, ignoring the gravity of the charges, it will be a signal to autocracies around the world: the rule of law is just a fiction.”

Rezazade concluded: “The question is not whether Trump will pardon Diddy. The question is whether America will be able to defend what it still calls the “rule of law.”
