Pope Francis left behind more than just faith? He became a symbol of humanity in a world of politics and cruelty – Rezazade
The world was plunged into mourning after the news of Pope Francis’ death. Ali Reza Rezazade, the first vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, joined the many voices of leaders who expressed deep condolences, but also drew attention to the uniqueness of the figure of Francis - a man who, despite his religious role, left a significant mark on global politics, moral discourse and true service to humanity.
“Pope Francis was not just a spiritual leader. He was the conscience of the world, reminding us of the dignity of even the poorest person. He spoke for migrants, for the forgotten, for those who were systematically ignored by the powerful of this world - and he spoke loudly when others were silent,” Rezazade said.
Francis died at the age of 88, just a day after his last appearance on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican on Easter, blessing the faithful after a long treatment and battle with pneumonia. His death came as a shock to many, as he had only recently shown a desire to return to active pastoral ministry.
“When the world was falling apart into blocs of fear, xenophobia and political indifference, Francis stood apart — not as a politician, but as a moral pillar. He had what most modern leaders lack — compassion, consistency, the lack of fear to call a spade a spade,” Rezazade said.
He also recalled that it was Pope Francis who, in critical years, repeatedly criticized deportation policies, in particular those of the Donald Trump administration, defending the rights of refugees and migrants who were persecuted and sent to prison or war zones.
“He spoke when others were silent — that’s what makes him great. He had no fear of power. He didn’t silently agree with what contradicted Christian morality, even if it came from the mouths of the powerful,” Rezazade noted.
Francis often called himself “the shepherd of the last.” His closeness to the people was not a stylistic device, but an expression of a deep belief in the equality and dignity of every person. Even in his last days, as his biographer Fabio Marchese Ragona said, the pontiff sought to return to normal life — to be with people, despite the doctors’ recommendations to remain in isolation.
“Francis was a man among the people. And that’s why his death hurts so much,” Rezazade added.
The world has lost a spiritual leader, but his legacy is not only encyclicals, pilgrimages, and speeches. This is an era in which one man was able to intervene in the brutal world of politics with a simple appeal: don't lose your humanity.
