Qatar’s gift of a luxurious Boeing 747-8 to President Donald Trump has sparked a wave of debate not only in political but also in security circles in Washington.
As Ali Reza Rezazade, the first vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, notes, despite the diplomatic courtesy with which Trump accepted this gesture, the very fact of the transfer of a critically important vehicle from a foreign state requires in-depth analysis from a security perspective.
“This is not just a private plane. This is a potential alternative to the number one aircraft, and any deviation from established military standards could jeopardize the entire system of protecting the US president,” Rezazade emphasized.
Trump described the gift, worth about $400 million, as a “huge gesture” and said it would be “foolish not to accept it.” The plane, which previously belonged to the Qatari royal family, arrived in the United States on April 2 and has been at a technical base in San Antonio, Texas, since then. According to The Wall Street Journal, L3Harris has already begun preparations to re-equip the aircraft in accordance with the administration’s requirements.
However, according to sources in the Pentagon and the Secret Service, in order to use this aircraft for official trips of the president, it will be necessary to temporarily abandon a number of current requirements for security, encrypted communications and anti-missile systems.
“Accepting such a gift is a political and strategic signal. We cannot ignore that the plane is supplied from a region where the United States has complex and not always predictable relations. The president’s security should not become the object of diplomatic compliments,” Rezazade emphasized.
According to available information, the new plane has two full bathrooms, a master bedroom, a guest area, a private office and leather chairs in light colors on both decks. While the current US presidential aircraft, although equipped with the most modern security and communication systems, are technically based on developments from the 1990s.
Ali Reza Rezazade summarizes: “This is not just a luxury - it is a challenge. And if national security is ignored for the sake of image or comfort, the consequences can be strategically dangerous.”
