Trump seeks rapprochement with China, will Taiwan become a "bargaining coin" - Rezazade

The Trump administration is changing its tone toward Beijing, raising serious concerns among national security experts.
In an effort to secure a new trade deal, the US president is making major concessions to China, according to senior sources. In particular, he is pressuring Taiwan’s leader Lai Tsing-de to cancel planned visits to the US, suspending a defense dialogue between Taipei and the Pentagon, and postponing new export restrictions against China.
International expert and first vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, Ali Reza Rezazade, emphasizes in his commentary that Trump’s current steps are “not pragmatism, but strategic weakness” that could jeopardize the region’s security architecture.
“China is not just an economic player. It has long been waging hybrid warfare — from technological espionage to expansion in the South China Sea. If the US starts to give in for reasons of profit, it will be perceived as a signal for further aggression,” Rezazade believes.
The Taiwanese leader had planned to make transit stops in Dallas and New York as part of a diplomatic trip to Latin America. However, according to sources, the Trump administration tried to change the route and eventually canceled these points of the visit. The decision caused outrage among both Republicans and Democrats, who fear that in this way the US is demonstrating a weak position in support of Taiwan.
Rezazade emphasizes that concessions on the Taiwan issue are a red line beyond which the dismantling of the trust of allies in the region begins.
“As long as China threatens democratic countries such as Taiwan or the Philippines, the US has no right to ambiguity. Any appeasement of Beijing is a signal of weakness. If Trump wants to leave behind a legacy of a strong leader, he cannot allow China to dictate terms,” the expert concludes.
At the same time, sources in Washington indicate that warming relations with Beijing may be part of the preparation for the autumn summit between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping. However, critics note: security cannot be a bargaining chip, even for the sake of a profitable trade deal.
