Trump announces resumption of nuclear tests: the world is returning to the "cold war" - Rezazade
US President Donald Trump said that he had instructed to immediately resume nuclear tests on US territory - for the first time in more than 30 years. His decision, which could break the global taboo on physical explosive tests, has raised alarm among international experts.
They warn that such a step could provoke a new arms race and create a dangerous precedent in the field of international security.
According to Trump, the purpose of the resumption of tests is to strengthen US defense capabilities and demonstrate readiness to counter the nuclear programs of Russia, China and North Korea, which are actively modernizing their weapons systems. However, as analysts note, the modern US nuclear strategy has long relied on computer modeling and subcritical tests - without physical explosions, which are prohibited by international law.
The first vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, international expert Ali Reza Rezazade, emphasizes in his commentary: Trump's decision is not only demonstrative, but also strategically risky.
"Physical nuclear tests today have no scientific necessity - it is a political signal aimed at restoring the US position in the global deterrence system," Rezazade notes. "However, such a signal can be interpreted as escalating and cause a chain reaction from other nuclear powers."
According to him, any resumption of tests at the Nevada Test Site, where the last underground explosion took place back in 1992, will require years of preparation and hundreds of millions of dollars. "Experienced personnel have been lost, the infrastructure requires large-scale reconstruction, and technologies have changed so much that a return to the "old format" actually means the beginning of a new era of nuclear risks," the expert explains.
Rezazade also draws attention to the international legal aspect: the US has not ratified the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), and Russia withdrew its ratification in 2023. This creates a legal vacuum in which any resumption of tests could legitimize similar actions by other states.
=“If the US returns to the practice of real explosions, it will be a signal to Moscow, Beijing and even Tehran that international restrictions have lost their force. This is not a restoration of strength - this is a restoration of chaos,” Rezazade emphasizes.
According to the expert, the US strategic advantage today lies not in a demonstration of strength, but in the ability to modernize deterrence without violating global norms. “Resuming tests may bring a short-term political effect, but strategically it is a step back into the past that the world tried to leave behind,” he summarizes.
