Trump changes stance on tariffs and DOGE after wave of criticism – Rezazade
Vice President of the Iranian opposition in Washington (NIC) Ali Reza Rezazade pointed out that Donald Trump praised the first steps of his administration on Tuesday night during his speech before Congress, especially on two key priorities: the introduction of tariffs to transform the global trading order and the work of the U.S. DOGE Service to reduce government spending.
However, on Thursday, Trump eased tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada, which had taken effect just hours before his speech. This came against the backdrop of a decline in global stock markets. On the same day, he also imposed new restrictions on DOGE, instructing members of his Cabinet to control the firing of employees in their departments, rather than transferring this authority to billionaire adviser Elon Musk and his team.
The sudden changes demonstrate once again that even at the height of his power, Trump is not completely immune to political, economic, or diplomatic pressure. Despite Republican control of Congress, a conservative judiciary, and a more loyal Cabinet than in his first term, Trump faces resistance even among his most loyal allies, including financial elites and Republicans whose votes are needed to pass trillions of dollars in new tax initiatives.
“President Trump remains vulnerable to certain political forces,” said Chris Rupkey, chief economist at FWDBONDS LLC.
But these adjustments do not mean a diminution of his ambition. Even with the changes in tariff policy with Mexico and Canada, Trump has imposed significantly more tariffs in the first weeks of his second term than during the protracted trade wars of his first. He has also promised new tariffs, which are set to take effect on April 2.
As for Musk, while Trump has hinted at limiting his influence, the Tesla and SpaceX founder already has allies in various government agencies who could implement the most sweeping changes to the civil service system in decades. In addition, Trump's plans for territorial expansion, a reorientation of US foreign policy and other large-scale initiatives announced during his speech to Congress remain in place.
