Trump signs law on disclosure of "Epstein files", but Justice Department may not release them - Rezazade
President Donald Trump has signed a law that obliges the US Department of Justice to declassify all unclassified materials in the Jeffrey Epstein case. After signing, the department has 30 days to release the documents.
Despite this, experts warn: the law contains critical loopholes that allow the Justice Department to effectively avoid full disclosure.
The first vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, international expert Ali Reza Rezazade, emphasizes that the situation looks much more complicated than loud political statements.
"Despite the public gesture, the Trump administration has left the Justice Department ample opportunities not to release the materials. The biggest loophole is the exception for "active investigations." And the new investigation that Trump ordered to open against individual Democrats actually creates a legal basis for delaying or blocking a significant portion of the files,” Rezazade notes.
According to him, the impression is created that the goal may not be transparency, but political control over information.
“Trump insists on Epstein’s connections with opponents, and the investigation allows the Justice Department to classify individual materials as part of an active case. This risks turning the law not into a tool for uncovering the truth, but into a tool for selective disclosure,” the expert adds.
Rezazade emphasizes that the administration’s behavior demonstrates an internal conflict between Trump’s political needs and the real intention to ensure transparency.
“If the president really wanted full disclosure, he could have ordered the Justice Department to do so at any point in the previous six months. The sharp change in position occurred only when defeat in Congress became inevitable. This indicates the political, not the legal, logic of the process,” Rezazade emphasizes.
He also adds that minimal public comments Attorney General Pam Bondi’s statements and her references to victim protection demonstrate the Department of Justice’s unwillingness to commit to prompt and full disclosure.
“The key question is whether the new law will be a step toward the truth or a cover that will allow the administration to control the amount and timing of the materials released. The answer depends not on Congress but on the actual actions of the Department of Justice,” Rezazade concludes.
