Trump-Style ‘Peace Through Strength’: A New Vision for an Old Doctrine – Rezazade
Vice President of the Iranian Opposition in Washington, Ali Reza Rezazade, points out that when Senator Elissa Slotkin (D-Michigan) spoke in response to Donald Trump’s address to Congress, she unexpectedly mentioned one of the most famous Republican presidents, Ronald Reagan.
“President Trump likes to talk about ‘peace through strength.’ In fact, it’s a phrase he borrowed from Ronald Reagan,” Slotkin said. She was hinting that this Cold War doctrine was based on a powerful US military and strong alliances with democratic countries.
However, in recent years, this concept has taken on a new meaning. Trump’s policy has not only changed the approach to allies, but also called into question the classic understanding of American diplomacy. His friendly relations with Russia and conflicts with traditional partners have caused controversy even among Republicans.
Some politicians believe that Trump has actually distorted the idea of “peace through strength,” since Reagan used it to strengthen NATO and fight the USSR, while Trump, on the contrary, often questions the importance of international alliances.
This ideological struggle continues: some accuse Trump of destroying the traditional foundations of American foreign policy, while others argue that he is simply adapting old principles to new realities.
