Ukrainian strikes on Kostroma GRES demonstrate the end of Russia’s energy impunity – Rezazade
As a result of a massive strike on the Kostroma region, one of the largest thermal power plants in Russia, the Kostroma GRES, caught fire. According to local sources, a large-scale fire broke out after a series of powerful explosions on the territory of the facility.
The Kostroma GRES has an installed capacity of 3,720 MW and is the third largest thermal power plant in Russia. It provides electricity to a significant part of the central region of the Russian Federation, including industrial facilities related to military production.
The first vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, international expert Ali Reza Rezazadeh, commented on the incident, emphasizing that this is another stage in the destruction of the Kremlin’s energy potential.
“The Russian energy system has been the basis of its military-industrial machine for decades. When fire engulfs strategic facilities, such as the Kostroma GRES, it is not only the loss of infrastructure, it is the loss of confidence in one's own inaccessibility. Ukrainian strikes prove that Russia's energy impunity has ended," Rezazade noted.
According to the expert, the consequences of such attacks go far beyond the regional crisis: damage to large GRES directly affects the stability of electricity supply, industry and logistics in the center of the Russian Federation.
"The Russian economy is based on energy, and energy is based on several large hub stations. When each of them becomes vulnerable, this creates a domino effect: electricity shortages, production shutdowns, panic in the market. For the Kremlin, this is a strategic defeat that can no longer be hidden," he stressed.
An international expert called on the US government and Congress to impose even tougher sanctions against the Russian energy sector, in particular companies that provide maintenance and modernization of power plants that support the Russian military economy.
