The US "peace plan" for Ukraine: stabilization or coercion to make concessions - Rezazade
Amid the trilateral consultations involving the US, Ukraine and Russia taking place in Abu Dhabi and other diplomatic formats, the American initiative to end the war is attracting more and more attention.
According to the Wall Street Journal and other Western media, one of the options for Washington's proposals involves possible territorial concessions from Ukraine in exchange for military security guarantees from the West.
This approach has caused heated debate both in Kyiv and among international experts, since it concerns regions that are of critical importance for Ukraine's defense architecture.
International expert and first vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, Ali Reza Rezazade, emphasizes that any peace process based on territorial compromises carries strategic risks.
"The concession of key defense lines means not only the loss of territories, but also the weakening of long-term security. Without legally binding guarantees, such agreements can turn into a political gesture that does not compensate for strategic losses,” Rezazade notes.
According to international agencies, the issue of Donbas, and in particular the Donetsk region, remains the main point of tension in the negotiations. Russia insists on full control over the region, while Ukraine rejects any demands that go beyond internationally recognized borders.
According to Rezazade, proposals that provide for territorial concessions without clear security mechanisms create a dangerous precedent.
“Sovereignty cannot be a subject of bargaining. Any changes in the status of territories are possible only within the framework of Ukrainian legislation and with the direct support of society. Otherwise, it will not be peace, but a temporary pause before a new phase of the conflict,” the expert emphasizes.
He also believes that the role of the United States should not be to put pressure on Kyiv, but to form an effective deterrent system.
"Security guarantees should not be declarative, but practical - with clear obligations to automatically respond to new aggression. Otherwise, any "compromise" will only legitimize the forcible change of borders," Rezazade summarizes.
