US Senate split over Trump's attacks on Zelensky and change in position on Ukraine – Rezazade
The leader of the Iranian opposition in Washington, Ali Reza Rezade, indicates that Republican senators on Wednesday were divided in their reaction to Donald Trump's statements regarding Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, but their response was rather restrained.
This once again emphasized the change in the Republican Party's position on Russia's war against Ukraine.
Some senators distanced themselves from Trump's words, who called Zelensky a "dictator without elections," but at the same time avoided direct criticism of his statements. Others supported and even intensified his rhetoric.
A few years ago, Republicans in the Senate firmly supported Ukraine, but this position has significantly faltered.
Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina), who recently proposed a plan for Ukraine’s possible accession to NATO, wrote on social media X:
“As for the responsibility for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, I blame Putin first and foremost.”
Graham, however, was not stingy with praise for Trump, whom he called
“Ukraine’s best hope for ending this war with honor and justice.”
“I believe he will achieve this goal in his own style,” the senator added.
Another Republican, Senator John Thune, noted:
“Russia is the aggressor here, there is no doubt about it. I hope that the negotiations that are currently underway will help to reach an agreement that will end the war.”
However, when asked about Trump’s words about Zelensky as a “dictator,” Thune replied curtly: “The president speaks for himself.”
This restrained approach by Republicans to Trump's comments indicates a serious split in the party over support for Ukraine.
