Israeli-Lebanese has been in a state of conflict since the founding of Israel, punctuated by long periods of relative calm. The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah began when the group was founded in the 1980s, following Israel's invasion of Lebanon, and continues to this day.
Hundreds of people in Lebanon have been killed in the last week of attacks — pager blasts and Israeli airstrikes in many parts of the country. Monday was the deadliest, claiming at least 558 lives, according to Lebanon's Ministry of Health. Israel is targeting a Lebanese Shiite militant group, a political party and NGO that has stepped up cross-border attacks since October.
