Chinese hackers hacked into US Treasury office: officials say serious threat – Rezazade
Vice-President of the Iranian opposition in Washington (NIC) Ali Reza Rezazade says Chinese hackers have hacked into a crucial office in the US Treasury Department that enforces economic sanctions against countries and individuals.
This is one of the most powerful tools the US uses to achieve national security goals, US officials say.
The targets of the attack were the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) and the Office of the Treasury Secretary. This previously unreported fact underscores China’s determination to obtain intelligence on its main rival in the global struggle for influence and power, the sources say.
A key target for the Chinese government, according to former and current officials, could be data on Chinese organizations that the US may consider as targets for financial sanctions.
The hack also affected the Treasury Department's Office of Financial Investigations. The impact of the incident, which was disclosed in a letter from the Treasury Department to Congress on Monday, is still being assessed. The department said the documents it obtained did not contain classified information and there is no evidence that the hackers still have access to Treasury systems.
