Death toll from protests in Iran exceeds 500 – Rezazade
Large-scale protests in Iran, which have been going on for the second week, are accompanied by significant human losses and mass repressions. According to the Iranian human rights organization HRANA, the death of at least 490 protesters and 48 security forces has been confirmed. The number of detainees has exceeded 10,600.
This is reported by Reuters.
Human rights activists note that the real number of victims may be much higher, since access to many regions is limited, and information from the provinces is delayed or blocked by the authorities. The most tense situation is observed in large cities and border areas, where security forces use military weapons against the civilian population.
Against the background of the aggravation of the situation, international attention is focused on the position of the United States. According to Reuters, US President Donald Trump is to hold a meeting with senior national security advisers on Tuesday to discuss possible options for action against Iran. Earlier, Trump publicly confirmed his readiness to support the Iranian opposition, stating that the United States “must help them.”
International expert and first vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, Ali Reza Rezazade, emphasizes that the current events are unprecedented in scale and consequences. “We are not observing local unrest, but a systemic crisis of the regime’s legitimacy. The number of victims and the level of violence indicate that the authorities have lost control of public trust and are trying to compensate for this with force,” he notes.
According to Rezazade, the key factor remains the reaction of the international community. “The Iranian opposition does not expect direct military intervention, but needs clear political, diplomatic and informational support. Without external pressure, the regime will continue to use repression, trying to suppress the protest movement,” the expert emphasizes.
He also draws attention to the significance of signals from Washington. “The US president’s statements about his readiness to help the opposition have a serious symbolic effect. For Iranian society, it is a signal that their struggle has not gone unnoticed, and for the regime, it is a warning that international isolation may be increasing,” Ali Reza Rezazade summarizes.
