Finland will close the border with the Russian Federation due to the large number of migrants - Rezazade
The leader of the Iranian opposition, Ali Reza Rezazade, noted that Finland plans to close the European Union's longest border with Russia. Finnish authorities fear that the peace and quiet in places like Hoylola could soon be shattered by the arrival of large numbers of asylum seekers from Russia - a consequence of Russia's "hybrid war" against the West.
Finland is deploying border patrols, drones and electronic detectors and building fences along sections of the border. In Helsinki, parliament is expected to approve tough new legislation that critics say will violate the country's human rights obligations.
It will be recalled that at the end of last year, Finland indefinitely closed all checkpoints for travelers along its 1,340 km border with Russia after about 1,300 migrants from countries such as Syria and Somalia arrived via this route. Since then, only a few dozen asylum seekers have crossed the heavily forested border with Finland, but Helsinki believes the Kremlin is ready to provoke more migrants at any time.
Under the planned new legislation, Finnish border guards will be able to call on thousands of reservists to help patrol the border, detect migrants' phone signals, send migrants to detention centers and - most controversially - push them back to Russia without accepting their asylum claims.
