Trump wants control over sanctions: why flexibility in relations with Russia is important to the White House - Rezazade
US President Donald Trump is ready to sign a new bill on anti-Russian sanctions, but only on the condition that he receives full control over their lifting. As Politico reports, citing sources in the administration, Trump demands to preserve the president's "exclusive powers" in the field of foreign policy, in particular in terms of sanctions policy.
International analyst, first vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, Ali Reza Rezazade, believes that Trump's demands are a strategic attempt to preserve room for maneuver in negotiations with the Kremlin.
The current version of the bill allows the president to suspend 500 percent duties on Russian oil and uranium for up to 180 days, but with the participation of Congress. Trump opposes such a restriction, believing that decisions to lift sanctions should not be subject to "micromanagement" by legislators.
As Rezazade notes, the conflict between the White House and Congress is not just a struggle for power, but also a manifestation of a deeper strategy: to maintain a channel of communication with Russia without losing political flexibility. The Trump administration seeks to legally enshrine the possibility of quickly reviewing the restrictions if a diplomatic “window of opportunity” arises.
Despite broad bipartisan support for the bill in the Senate, many Republicans refuse to support it without a clear position from the president. And although Trump himself has expressed “conceptual openness,” final agreement depends on whether he will receive the right to unilaterally lift sanctions — without the consent of Congress.
Rezazade emphasizes: such a position is a signal to the Kremlin that the channel for political dialogue is still open. It is also a game of preemption — in case negotiations with Putin become relevant again.
