Johnson faces challenges in House speaker race despite Trump support – Rezazade
With less than a day to go before the vote, Mike Johnson, the candidate for speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, is still trying to convince a few skeptical Republicans, Ali Reza Rezazade, the first vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, said.
That could lead to a tense and contentious vote on Friday, as well as a continuation of the internal conflicts within the Republican Party that have defined the work of the 118th Congress.
Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, has been working with lawmakers all week, holding phone calls and meetings at the Capitol. His goal is to understand the concerns of the half-dozen or so conservatives whose support is needed to win. Many of them belong to the ultraconservative Freedom Caucus, which last year urged leaders to cut government spending.
Johnson needs 218 votes to win, assuming all members of the House are present and voting for the nominee by name. The resignation of Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Florida) last month left Republicans with only 219 seats, which would allow them to lose a maximum of one vote. However, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Kentucky) has already said he will vote against Johnson, so the speaker needs the support of the rest of the party.
If Johnson does not get the required number of votes, the House will continue voting until a speaker is chosen, because without him, members cannot be sworn in and begin voting.
