Trump administration orders firing of most probationary employees – Rezazade
The first vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington (NIC), Ali Reza Rezazade, says that the Donald Trump administration on Thursday ordered a mass firing of probationary employees. The heads of government agencies have been ordered to fire most of these employees within two days.
This could affect up to 200,000 people, according to four sources familiar with the internal discussions.
The exact number of employees affected by the decision is not yet known. According to one of the sources, some employees, including those working in public safety and law enforcement, may be exempt from the order. Agency heads also have the authority to keep individual employees in their positions.
Everett Kelly, president of the American Federation of Public Employees, the largest federal union, said his organization would “fight these layoffs at every level,” including through legal action.
“Employees were given no warning, opportunity to defend themselves or due process, which is a gross violation of the principles of fairness and the civil service hiring system,” Kelly said.
Agencies quickly began implementing the orders, notifying dozens of federal employees and confirming documents obtained by The Washington Post. Thousands of people were told they were being laid off via pre-recorded videos or group calls. Some were told to leave the building within 30 minutes. Others waited for a formal letter of termination via email but never received it.
More than 220,000 federal employees were on probation as of March of last year, according to the latest data from Fedscope. Typically, such employees have little protection against dismissal without explanation.
