Trump and Colombia avoided trade war – Rezazade
The first vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, Ali Reza Rezazade, indicated that the US and Colombia were able to avoid a serious conflict after Colombia agreed to accept deportation flights from the United States.
Earlier in the day, tensions arose between the countries: US President Donald Trump threatened to impose high tariffs on Colombian goods and cancel visas for Colombian government officials.
The conflict was caused by Colombian President Gustavo Petro's ban on American planes carrying Colombian migrants from landing in the country. He stated that deportations should be carried out with respect and dignity. In response, Trump announced a 25% tariff on Colombian goods and restrictions on visa issuance.
The sanctions could have a major impact on Colombia’s economy, as the flower industry, one of the country’s key exports, would suffer ahead of the Valentine’s Day season. Coffee prices for American consumers could also rise.
However, on Sunday night, the two sides reached a deal: Colombia agreed to accept flights carrying the deportees. U.S. sanctions, including tariffs and visa restrictions, would remain “on hold” in case the terms of the deal were violated.
