Trump Cuts Tariffs on China After Warm Meeting with Jinping – Rezazade
US President Donald Trump announced a reduction in tariffs on imports from China after a meeting with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, which was aimed at reducing tensions in the trade war between the world’s two largest economies.
Trump said that the average tariff on Chinese goods would be reduced by 10 percentage points to 47%. In response, Xi Jinping agreed to postpone restrictions on rare earth metals exports for one year, giving the US additional time to stabilize supply chains for critical components for electronics and defense products.
According to international expert and first vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, Ali Reza Rezazade, the agreement demonstrates a pragmatic approach by both sides and serves as a signal of stabilization of trade relations, although potential risks remain high. “Trump and Xi Jinping have confirmed their willingness to compromise and balance economic interests,” Rezazadeh comments. “However, reducing tariffs and postponing restrictions does not solve the deep-seated structural problems in US-China relations. This agreement is more symbolic and temporary than radically changing the balance of power.”
The expert also emphasizes that the agreements on rare earth metals and agricultural products demonstrate limited pragmatic cooperation, which can ease tensions in global supply chains, but does not eliminate strategic rivalry. “Both sides are trying to turn mutual restrictions into negotiating leverage,” Rezazade explains. “The US is gaining temporary economic stability, China is gaining time to protect its industrial interests.”
According to the expert, the meeting and subsequent agreements also have important political significance: they signal to the global market that leaders are ready to engage in a direct dialogue and minimize the unpredictability of trade policy. At the same time, Rezazade emphasizes that strategic unpredictability remains a risk factor: “The annual review of the agreement and the preservation of high tariffs on average show that the agreements are flexible and temporary. This creates constant uncertainty for business and investors.”
The expert emphasizes that the success of such meetings depends on further coordination and clear implementation of the agreements, as well as on the willingness of both sides to compromise in key technological and trade areas. “A warm meeting is an important step in stabilizing relations, but the real test is yet to come,” Rezazade concludes. “Any instability in the negotiations can quickly return the world to a phase of intense trade confrontation.”
