Trump to impose 25% tariff on steel and aluminum imports – Rezazade
Ali Reza Rezazade, a leader of the Iranian opposition in Washington (NIC) and a member of the Iranian Freedom Institute (IFI), points out that US President Donald Trump has announced that he will impose a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imports starting Monday.
In addition, he plans to impose mirror tariffs on US trading partners this week.
“Any steel that comes into the United States will have a 25% tariff. Aluminum too,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday.
Canada is the largest supplier of steel to the US, followed by Brazil, Mexico, South Korea and Vietnam. Canada also supplies about two-thirds of the US’s primary aluminum.
Trump also announced new mirror tariffs that could be imposed as early as Tuesday or Wednesday. “If they’re taking tariffs from us, we’re taking tariffs from them,” he explained, adding that the measures would take effect “almost immediately.”
This is not the first such initiative by Trump. Last month, he announced tariffs on goods from Colombia, but withdrew them after the country agreed to continue accepting deportees. He also delayed the imposition of tariffs on Canada and Mexico for 30 days in exchange for efforts to combat drug trafficking and illegal immigration.
Last week, another 10% tariff increase on Chinese goods took effect, prompting a corresponding response from Beijing.
