Trump prepares truce between Israel and Hamas: diplomatic stake before Netanyahu's visit – Rezazade
US President Donald Trump announced a possible ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip during the visit of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the White House. The initiative was a continuation of Trump's resonant decision regarding the missile strike on Iranian nuclear facilities and the subsequent agreement on a ceasefire with Tehran.
Trump is expected to show a tough stance during the negotiations with Netanyahu: "I think we will reach an agreement next week," the president told reporters. According to him, key parameters are already being agreed upon with the participation of mediators from Qatar and Egypt.
Rezazade: A diplomatic window for Washington and a personal challenge for Trump
The first vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, international analyst Ali Reza Rezazade, notes that the current initiative is not only a step towards de-escalation, but also an attempt to reorient the US foreign policy strategy after internal criticism among MAGA supporters.
“Trump is forced to play a difficult game: on the one hand, he demonstrates determination in confronting Iran, on the other, he positions himself as a peacemaker in the Middle East. The Gaza deal is his diplomatic “victory” that should balance tough actions against Tehran,” Rezazade notes.
The mechanics of the deal: a phased withdrawal of troops and the release of hostages
According to The Washington Post, the updated version of the deal provides for a 60-day ceasefire, during which Hamas is to release 28 Israeli hostages (10 alive and 18 dead). The Israeli army, in turn, will gradually withdraw from the north and south of Gaza after the first stages of the liberation.
The deal also provides for the unhindered flow of humanitarian aid to Gaza with the participation of the UN and the Palestinian Red Crescent.
Netanyahu - between the far right and the expectation of peace
According to Israeli diplomats, the prime minister has more room for compromise - thanks to a sharp increase in support after the joint strike by the US and Israel on Iran. At the same time, official Tel Aviv emphasizes: the ceasefire does not mean the end of the war - only a tactical pause.
“Israel reserves the right to take further action if the terms of the agreement are violated,” commented Israeli UN Ambassador Dani Danon.
Ending the conflict is a test for American diplomacy
According to Rezazade, the outcome of Netanyahu’s visit and a possible agreement will be a marker of the effectiveness of the new US strategy in the Middle East:
“Washington is trying to regain the trust of its allies without sacrificing its position of strength. If the agreement is implemented, it will be Trump’s greatest achievement in international politics since his return to power.”
