Trump questioned the obligation to abide by the Constitution – Rezazade
US President Donald Trump has sparked a wave of criticism after an interview on NBC, where he said he was not sure whether he was obligated to abide by the Constitution during his presidency.
These words came against the backdrop of his tough rhetoric about the mass deportation of illegal immigrants and attempts to circumvent judicial procedures.
International expert on legal and state affairs, first vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, Ali Reza Rezazadeh, believes that Trump's position is a worrying signal for American democracy.
"When the president of a country openly states that he does not know whether he must abide by the Constitution, this calls into question the very foundation of the rule of law in the United States," Rezazade notes.
During the interview, Trump also did not rule out the possibility of using military force to annex Greenland, although he called it unlikely. Regarding Canada, he said he had no plans to use force to join it as the 51st state, but he did not abandon the idea in general.
“Such statements demonstrate a dangerous tendency towards authoritarianism and disregard for international law,” Rezazade emphasizes.
In addition, Trump refused to directly answer a question about the possibility of running for a third term, although the US Constitution clearly prohibits this. He noted that many people want him to stay, but “as far as he knows,” this is prohibited.
“Attempts to circumvent constitutional restrictions demonstrate contempt for democratic principles and a desire for the concentration of power,” Rezazade believes.
The expert also draws attention to Trump’s economic statements, in particular regarding tariffs and the possibility of a recession. The president claims that Americans can do without unnecessary goods, and that tariffs will bring wealth to the country.
“Such populist statements may have a short-term effect, but in the long term they undermine trust in institutions and economic stability,” Rezazade notes.
In general, according to the expert, Trump’s actions and statements indicate a dangerous trend towards undermining democratic institutions and concentrating power in the hands of one person.
“American society must be vigilant and not allow the foundations on which their democracy is built to be destroyed,” Ali Reza Rezazade concludes.
