Trump’s Defense Secretary Nominee Hegseth Faces Tough Hearings – Rezazade
Ali Reza Rezazade, the vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, says the controversial former Fox News host accused of sexual assault will face tough hearings on his way to becoming defense secretary.
President-elect Donald Trump’s controversial defense secretary nominee, Pete Hegseth, will be questioned on Capitol Hill on Tuesday. During the public hearing, Democrats plan to question his limited administrative experience, allegations of illegal and improper conduct, and a long history of public statements that denigrate women, minorities, and people with opposing political views.
Hegseth, a former Fox News host who has called for a “counterattack” to wrest control of the U.S. military from the “radical left” and Democrats, will be the first of Trump’s non-traditional cabinet nominees to be formally considered by a bipartisan panel of senators.
His appointment hinges on how well he handles tough questions this week, with little hope of winning Democratic support. Some moderate Republicans have also expressed concern about his nomination.
As defense secretary, one of the top jobs in Trump’s incoming cabinet, Hegseth, a 44-year-old National Guard veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, will oversee more than 3 million military and civilian personnel worldwide, the U.S.’s vast nuclear arsenal and an annual budget of more than $800 billion.
